When I first started fishing with the Connecticut Surfcasters Association, the other guys I fished with were using plugs while I was using eels. Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay. Anyone getting tired of catching albies? The run is still strong from Chatham to the Canal, and some big albies are still in the mix. I had one nearly take off with all my line before spitting the hook on Sunday. I was wondering what I might have hooked a fisherman just down the beach landed an albie in the plus-pound neighborhood.
Schoolies are everywhere, getting fat on the schools of peanut bunker that are still hanging around the harbors and beaches. Jeff also mentioned that bass fishing was picking up. The key to the better fish, Jeff said, was fishing right on the bottom. Jigs, especially green and white, bounced off the bottom was the key to the larger bass while mostly schoolies were taking plugs. The report from Hayden at Red Top Sporting Goods was that most of the fish in the Canal were small, but the next week holds promise, with the New Moon.
Some bluefish have also been reported from the Herring Run area. Hayden also said that some boat fishermen have been finding schools of keeper bass in Cape Cod Bay. Jeff at Macos Bait and Tackle reported stripers and blues in the Canal.
The striped bass took about an hour to get biting as the tide flow gathered velocity, but once they started it was game on! We had multiple drifts of 3 and 4 rod hookups as we drifted our sand eels across the sand bars of the rips. Unfortunately we had no one else to share this amazing fishing with as there wasn’t another boat anywhere near us!

Yesterday was pretty uneventful. Just Doggies and Whiting. Got down there today. Met Shane Edwards and away we went. Both had two rods ray fishing but I had a score of lug just to keep me occupied if things were slow.. Neither of us had a thing right over HT and ebb.
His column appears every other week during the fishing season. Last week, the stripers were very active, chasing and eating those mackerel that arrived in great numbers. A couple of days, the squid were also in the Canal as reported by Seaside Club fisherman Steve Elwell, and the latest leader of the summer derby, Greg Tavares. When Steve was fishing last Friday, the bass were chasing the mackerel out of the water onto the area where he was fishing.
A few minutes went by and Steve spotted a weasel grabbing the mackerel that landed on the shore.

Unable to swim, they’re pushed along by strong winds to the shore or to shallower waters, where they can literally freeze to death. As of Monday morning, the sanctuary had recovered turtles, putting on track to be the second-largest cold-stun season since the sanctuary started its rescue program in the early s, according to Jenette Kerr, communications coordinator for the sanctuary.
Of that total, turtles were found alive and were dead — about a ratio. Kerr told NPR that this early in the season, generally “about 80 percent or more of the turtles we rescue are alive. There were also nine loggerheads, including one weighing nearly pounds.

Fish being essential to many diets. Presented here is general information of Atlantic Cod, its reproduction, habitat, food, fishing season, angling tips, handling and cooking. In the northwest Atlantic it inhabits waters from western Greenland south to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and is most abundant from the coast of northern Labrador to the Nantucket Shoals region off Massachusetts.
Cod are easily distinguished from most other marine fish by their three rounded dorsal fins and two anal fins that are mirror images of the second and third dorsals. They also have a prominent barbel “whisker” on the chin. Atlantic cod occasionally reach lengths in excess of 5 to 6 feet. Off shore cod tend to be larger than inshore ones, the former frequently reaching sizes of 25 pounds and 40 to 42 inches in length while the latter usually weigh 6 to 12 pounds and measure 27 to 34 inches in length.
Both sexes usually reproduce for the first time when 5 or 6 years old. The fecundity number or eggs produced in a given year of females increases with size and age.
