Dave is desperate to get Alli back, who wants nothing to do with him. Dave joins the Model UN and surprises Alli by setting everything up. She agrees to finally talk with Dave, which leads to them making out and getting back together. He blocks her on all social media sites, and when she calls him, Dave tells her to never call him again. Dave and Alli greet all of the students from other schools who arrive at Degrassi for the Model UN, and Dave comes face to face with Jacinta again. Dave secretly talks to Jacinta and invites her to meet up outside, and they go for a drive. Dave catches up with Jacinta, and as they continue to argue Jacinta walks into traffic without looking and gets hit by a car. Dave returns to Degrassi, where Alli is waiting to chew him out. It reminded me of how annoyed everyone was after Nowhere To Run, where Bhandurner officially derailed itself in less than sixty seconds with a revelation that was out of character for Dave.

The Next Next Next Generation kicked off last week. Without further ado, here are the top 10 queer and feminist-y moments of Degrassi season Fortunately, Drew decided to get some ambition in his senior year by becoming a leader in the student council, and getting an internship with a douchey mayoral candidate. The mothers and ex-casual-not-casual-pool house-frequenting lovers meet with Principal Simpson, who is probably the worst person to use as a conflict mediator and who helps resolve this conflict in no way.
I hate men like you! You did a dumb, selfish, insensitive thing.
Here’s a list of TV shows that aired (or are expected to air) during the season (roughly September through August ) but won’t be back for the season.
Jordan Todosey 10—13 regular Born “Gracie,” Adam is a trans boy. He and his stepbrother Drew transferred to Degrassi due to the excessive bullying that he received at his old school. After being outed by Bianca, he was once again the victim of transphobia , although he eventually earned the respect and admiration that he deserved from his classmates. Another major problem for Adam had been finding love as a trans man. After numerous attempts at romance, he finally found true love in Becky Baker despite their beliefs.
During summer break, Adam was involved in a car accident after texting Becky while driving and later passed away during surgery. The combination of Adam being a favorite character, and Jordan being at the end of her contract, presented a unique opportunity to tell this story through such a beloved character. As saddened as we are to say goodbye to Adam, we feel this storyline will affect even more lives in an authentic way She was considered a bad girl at Degrassi who hung out with her boyfriend Jay and his gang.
Her exterior softened as she befriended Ellie, Marco, and eventually her nemesis Paige, with whom she began a lesbian relationship. She briefly became a stripper to prevent her family from being evicted. After realizing things were never going to change at home, she moved in with Paige, Marco, and Ellie.
Degrassi: The Next Generation Survey! :D?
Teenagers can see themselves reflected in the show. These are all valid points, but no one seems to be talking in depth about how Degrassi is just damn fine TV. Next Class the detailed attention it deserves. So go, go watch!

Despite the older meaning of the word “gay,” gay characters in fiction tend to be a miserable lot, and not by simple coincidence — their misery can be attributed largely to their sexuality or, more accurately, other people’s attitudes towards it. In short, they don’t just have angst, they have gayngst. Characters suffering from gayngst are prone to alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse , self-loathing, rampant homophobia towards themselves and others , falling in tragic unrequited love with heterosexuals , contemplating and often committing suicide , and wishing that they were straight.
Gayngst is a Pet-Peeve Trope of many because while it usually portrays gay people sympathetically and addresses an issue many gay people in Real Life go through, it can be interpreted as saying that it’s impossible to be gay without being miserable, or that gay people don’t deserve Happy Endings , or at its very worst and most ineptly-handled, gay relationships are innately disastrous.
However , gayngst is still unfortunately common in real life. After all, True Art Is Angsty transcends sexual orientation; a real-life term for this would be Internalised Homophobia. If the story wants an uplifting tone, the character will eventually come to terms with their sexuality, have the obligatory Coming-Out Story , and either live Happily Ever After with their love interest, or morph into some other gay archetype usually Straight Gay or Lipstick Lesbian ; either this is their natural personality or they still have some lingering insecurity.
Gayngst is often found in the Yaoi and Yuri Genre works for obvious reasons. Doesn’t come up quite as often in works with a Cast Full of Gay — even if a couple of characters are of the angsty persuasion, they’re usually balanced out by the rest of the cast in such a way that the Unfortunate Implications are done away with.
Not to be confused with the Gayngster , although some gayngsters probably have their share of gayngst. Clumsy examples of gayngst often dive headfirst into Wangst territory. Sister Trope of Bury Your Gays , which it frequently overlaps with.

But after the two had sex, Grace told her that she was actually super-straight and liked someone else — Zig. What a let down. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Zoe’s devastation led her to hook up with Zig herself, torching Zig’s relationship with Maya and her own friendship with Grace. This ship went down in flames, but it was fun while it briefly lasted.
Andrew “Drew” Torres is a Class of graduate of Degrassi Community School, having transferred there at the start of his Junior year and dropping out for most of the school year. Drew isn’t the smartest when it comes to academics. He does, however, make up for it by being very.
Main[ edit ] For the new generation of students, producers auditioned over six hundred school-aged children in an attempt to provide characters to which the teenaged target-audience could relate. Ryan Cooley portrayed class clown James Tiberius “J. Shane Kippel played school bully Gavin “Spinner” Mason. Raditch , now promoted to school principal, and Pat Mastroianni returned to his role as Joey Jeremiah.
Stacey Farber played Ellie Nash , a goth whose home life is in turmoil, and Adamo Ruggiero portrayed Marco Del Rossi , who is struggling to accept the reality that he is gay. Towards the end of the season, Schmidt’s character, Terri McGreggor, was written out of the show when her possessive boyfriend Rick pushed her to the ground and knocked her head against a rock, causing her to fall into a coma.
The Next Generation, there have been several departures from the series. Season six depicted the first death of one of the show’s main characters when J. Yorke was stabbed and killed. He left the series during the fourth season in the wake of the death of Rick Murray , and returned for the sixth season, but departed the series again at the end of the season. The exodus of several major cast members was reportedly an executive decision that left the actors and producers on bad terms, with Graham stating in an interview with Vibe that “[the producers] did us foul.
As of season 10, none of the characters from the earlier seasons remain, with the exception of Brogren, whose character has been promoted to the principal of Degrassi Community School; the series now centres on the new generation of Degrassi students. Guest roles[ edit ] Besides Brogren, Mistysyn, Stepto, and Mastroianni having starring roles, other actors from Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High have returned to guest star in their old roles throughout Degrassi: The Next Generation’s run.

The Degrassi franchise began in with the mini-series The Kids of Degrassi Street , and has gone through several incarnations since then. The Next Generation known as simply ”Degrassi” from seasons , premiered in , with the some of the kid actors from the s show reprising their roles as adults. S, it has aired on TeenNick formerly The N from to Next Class in This show is very much like a Soap Opera , with constantly shifting relationships and angst, but can be as serious as a regular television drama.
On the negative side, the show is as melodramatic as adult soaps. There are times when it feels like one giant Very Special Episode stretched out into a Story Arc except that the very special problem isn’t resolved in twenty minutes. In the very first episode , Emma narrowly avoids getting raped by a pedophile she met online and Emma’s mother got pregnant with her as a teen on the s show. However, on the plus side, the Soap Opera format lets it go much deeper and more long-term than the average show about teens no solving problems in twenty minutes, and most of the kids have gone through real Character Development.
This show is notable for a few reasons. The show is one of the few exceptions to Dawson Casting ; the teenage characters are almost all played by actual teenagers, and they’re very good actors, lately coming to the series with years of experience in other TV productions, often alongside each other. And despite the famed Anvilicious-ness of the show, some of the lessons taught by the show are really important for the teenage audience.
The show is usually cited as one of the few “earnest” Teen Dramas and the show has won a Peabody in for the portrayal of Adam, the first regular transgender character in the history of teen television.

Suicide, cancer, weekend-long meth addictions, teen pregnancy — there’s a reason why they say that the show “goes there. Throughout hundreds of episodes, decades of high school, and seemingly numerous Degrassi Community School students, we’ve witnessed just about every permutation of romantic couplings you could possibly imagine. Except, I guess, for polyamory.
Teachers tend to be annoying sticks-in-the-mud who do nothing but spoil people’s fun. Parents are clueless , no longer care , or are either over- or under protective. And any other designated authority figures the kid might come across? Usually, this is just plot necessity especially on comedy shows. After all, a High School Hustler could hardly get anything done if the teachers kept their eyes open, and if the parents were vigilant; being told that You Are Grounded would wreck the plot.
But on a handful of drama shows, there’s a real venom to it. Radio Free Roscoe is about a group of heroic teens who defy a tyrannical school administration. On a smaller scale, Degrassi: The Next Generation has episodes where it is implied that stealing school property is no big deal, but it’s disgraceful to inform on the thief. This can also occur in shows where you Can’t Get Away with Nuthin’ — kids who break school rules somehow always get caught, but due to bad luck , not because a teacher was alert.
This is also common when adults are told something is happening, but simply don’t believe it , resulting in a Cassandra Truth.

Next Class” episode, ” SorryNotSorry. Next Class” and other shows ahead! Unlike the series’ first take on on the subject , there’s no actual shooting this time around. But the episode serves as a reminder that just like sex, drugs and acne, the threat of gun violence in schools is very much something that teens have to worry about. And with every passing year, the production of the show becomes shiner and the new cast members more attractive — in other words, more Americanized.
So that was always the plan. As Glinski noted, in , a student bringing a gun to school was surprising. In , after the massive increase in school shootings shown in the media, that same storyline isn’t. In fact, the subject has been a surprisingly common theme in some of our favorite TV shows since the mid-’90s. Read on to see which shows tackled the topic successfully and which fell flat.
