Historical origin[ edit ] The term ward originally referred to the political subdivision of some of the municipalities in the mid-western United States where members of the LDS Church resided, and in particular the political organization of Nauvoo, Illinois , in the s. Bishops were assigned duties and responsibility over specific ward boundaries in these cities, and over time individual congregations were defined by these boundaries. After the Mormon Exodus to Utah, this same terminology was preserved in the establishment of communities throughout the western United States. Voting districts of several Utah communities still follow the historical boundaries of their original LDS Church congregations. Due to the religious connection of this term, traditional Mormon pioneer communities generally do not use the term ward to define voting districts for political purposes. A stake , the next highest level of organization, may be created if there are at least five ward-sized branches in adjacent areas. Within the United States and Canada, a minimum of members is required to create a ward; elsewhere, a minimum of members is required.

The fort is an allegory for the Priesthood protection they’ll provide for these dear sisters if they but agree to be their eternal companions. However, like a blanket fort, their object lesson is flimsy. I was walking along with my wife and infant son, slightly freezing to death in the Utah winter, when I was approached by eight young adults early 20’s, equal numbers of men and women. Now, in most cities of the world, when you’re approached by a gang of young people, you get ready to hand over your wallet and hope you don’t end up being stabbed in the face.
This was Utah, however, so I was ready to expect something different. The “gang” leader started the conversation: You’re wearing a green shirt and we need someone wearing one. I was number
Many also come for internships with Western or even Chinese companies. Whatever the reason, YSAs in China tend to be hardy, adventurous, and often in for a lot more challenge and sometimes a lot less income or fun than they bargained for. Shanghai is one of the favorite spots to visit, especially since there are some significant YSA gatherings there every six months for District Conference for foreign passport-holders. In fact, local members of the Church often make their homes available for YSAs coming to town so they can attend District Conference affordably. No guarantees, but we like to help.

As always, the bloggernacle ignores the substance of the article and focuses instead on the seemingly more controversial or political issues related to it. Is it too straightforward for them? In addition, does anyone sincerely believe that Elder Nelson would have written this article for purely political purposes, or as a mere academic plaything for the self-appointed intelligentsia? When was the last time a Church publication discussed this issue in such detail? This sort of situation is, in part, what Elder Nelson is trying to address in his article, I think.
But even if Elder Nelson carefully planned the timing of this article, in collusion with the General Authorities and Church employees who oversee and run the Church magazines, so what? He merely infuses a bit of Church doctrine and policy into the debate. We would all do well to heed them. Todd Christofferson was sustained as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles this morning.
June 1, Author: I have a particular interest in this as I have a daughter in her late 30s that was widowed last year due to cancer, and she lives in Utah County. The article is partly a book review of Date-onomics, a book that breaks down dating trends by demographics.
